5 Attractions To Visit At Pearl Harbor - More Than Just the Arizona Memorial

When people think of Hawaii, they ordinarily think of Waikiki, brilliant Head, the volcanoes, and, of course, Pearl Harbor. And, when they think of Pearl Harbor, they think of the Arizona Memorial. They practically all the time know the story behind the opportunity hours of the U.S. Entry into World War Ii that included the sinking of the battleship Uss Arizona and the tragic loss of 1177 men that went down with her.

Some people even know of the Uss Battleship Missouri Memorial located nearby. For those who may not be customary with that part of Us history, it was on the deck of the Uss Missouri that the treaty was signed, ending the war with Japan. So, by bringing the Uss Missouri to Pearl Harbor, we have the symbols for both the starting and the end of the war with Japan.

A third attraction that many visit is the World War Ii vintage submarine, the Uss Bowfin. The saving and restoration of this submarine was the ensue of years of endeavor and cooperation in the middle of both troops and civilian volunteers. The process began with its buy on August 3, 1979, and it was moved to its current location near the Visitor's center for the Uss Arizona Memorial in December, 1980. And, officially opened as a museum ship on April 1, 1981.

There are two further attractions located on Pearl Harbor that are not as well-known; the Uss Oklahoma Memorial and the Pacific Aviation Museum. Few people know that the battleship Uss Oklahoma was also sunk the morning of December 7, 1941. She went down with 429 marines and sailors. On December 7th, 2007, the 66th Anniversary of its sinking, the Uss Oklahoma Memorial, was dedicated in their memory.

The Pacific Aviation Museum located on Ford Island, a short shuttle ride from the Visitor's center of the Arizona Memorial, includes the 42,000 quadrate foot Hangar 37, which displays aircraft from World War Ii, together with a Japanese Zero, and the Korean War. There is also Hangar 79, which houses aircraft from the Vietnam War era to more new times. There are both self-guided tours and docent-guided tours available.

These are all must-see displays and tours for World War Ii history-buffs. Either you spend a full-day going from one to someone else or just a integrate of hours at the Arizona Memorial, I all the time recommend that you arrive early. While admission is free to the Uss Arizona Memorial, there are small charges from - per adult, for the other attractions mentioned.

Pearl Harbor remains a very active part of the Us Navy and is the only naval base in the Us to be designated a National Historical Landmark.
