Top Ten Fashion Trends From the 1940's

Rationing:

World War Ii impacted virtually every aspect of American life and fashion was no exception. In 1942, the United States imposed a rationing system similar to the one Great Britain had implemented the previous year, limiting, among other things, the whole of fabric that could be used in a single garment. Materials including wool, silk, leather and a fledgling DuPont Corp. Invention called nylon were diverted for use in uniforms, parachutes, shoelaces and even bomber noses.

Pearl

Jackets could be no more than 25 inches in length, pants no more than 19 inches in circumference at the hem, belts no more than two inches wide and heels no more than an inch in height. Hemlines rose to the knee in an attempt to conserve fabric. Buttons, cuffs, pockets and decorative details like ruffles and lace were used sparingly. Women wore shorter, boxy jackets for a V-shaped silhouette reminiscent of soldiery uniforms. Even Hollywood traded explicate costumes for simplified designs, a move many claimed lent movies a new air of realism.

Nylon:

As soon as it was introduced in 1938, women embraced artificial nylon as a exchange for silk stockings. In the early 1940s, however, with silk already diverted to the war effort, the government recognized similar uses for nylon and commandeered it as well. Women responded by coating their legs in tan makeup and drawing lines up the backs of their calves to mimic seams. By the time the war ended and stockings returned to store shelves, nylon had become a generic term for hosiery.

Swing skirts.

The swing skirt had a round cut designed to look best in full jitterbug twirl. Swing skirts were a base sight on Uso dance floors as young women danced with uniformed men to the jazzy horns that characterized the Big Band Era. Housewives were known to wear a more conservative version of the swing dress, sometimes in polka-dot or tiny floral prints.

Hats:

Hats became one of the few ways to express personel style with minimal resources. They were worn in a wide range of styles and personalized with scraps of foil, sequins, netting, paper and string.

Hair and makeup:

Hairstyles became more explicate as women sought ways to distinction their dull wardrobes. Shoulder length or longer hair was rolled into complicated shapes and secured with bobby pins. Screen sirens like Lauren Bacall, Veronica Lake and Rita Hayworth popularized side parts and finger waves. Makeup was dramatic, characterized by matte foundation, powder, heavy brows and captivating scarlet lips.

Platform pumps:

The wartime shortage of leather and steel forced shoe designers to get more creative and, as a result, shoes were cobbled from materials fluctuating from crocodile hide to cork. Shoes were more utilitarian than stylish, with low heels and little color choices. By the mid to late 1940s, platform pumps with high heels in T-straps, ankle straps or open toes had replaced the dowdy wedgie with its flat shape and thick cork soles.

Menswear as womens wear:

A whole of men may have spent the first half of the 1940s in uniform, but their civilian clothes came in handy for the women who filled their home-front jobs. Women raided the closets of absent men and tailored the suits to fit themselves. McCalls even introduced a pattern aimed specifically at modifying a masculine suit to fit feminine curves. Suddenly, the sexually ambivalent look pioneered in the late 1930s by Katherine Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich was radical no more. The emergence of the dress pattern and electric sewing machine led women to make their own suits from scratch, opting for gabardine due to the scarcity of wool. Many with physically demanding facility jobs soon began wearing practical pants and Rosie the Riveter jeans.

Sweaters:

By the mid-1940s, many women had abandoned the single-piece corset in favor of panties and structured bras that lifted and accentuated the bust line. In 1946, a well-endowed Jane Russell appeared onscreen in a cantilever bra designed by Howard Hughes, prefiguring the bullet-bra 1950s and the reign of the sweater girl. Loose-fitting cardigans were also popular, particularly on college campuses.

Sportswear:

The virtual disappearance of French fashion houses while the war led American designers to search for their own creativity. Designers like Bonnie Cashin and Claire McCardell were instrumental in the creation of sportswear, that singularly American look featuring coordinated separates that could be worn in layers or in assorted combinations. The trend not only gave women increased options and made it appear as if they had more clothes than they honestly did, but also blurred the line between couture and ready-to-wear by showing women they could be both chic and comfortable without spending a fortune.

The New Look:

By the late 1940s, women craved a return to glamor and designers obliged with swirling skirts and shimmering evening gowns inspired by film stars like Ingrid Bergman, Barbara Stanwyck and Joan Crawford.

In 1947, French couturier Christian Dior practically single-handedly brought an end to wartime austerity with a fashion line observers christened the New Look. Severe angles were replaced with curves, hemlines dropped back below the knee and skirts were generously draped. Structured undergarments were key to the New Look, which featured broad shoulders, cinched waists, emphasized bust lines and padded hips. The pencil skirt was a figure-hugging alternative to bouffant skirts. Men, too, longed for freedom from conservative tailoring in khaki and olive drab. They found relief in wide-legged trousers, full-length coats and suits in an array of colors. Both mens and womens trousers featured higher waists, widely cut legs and cuffs and came in textured tweeds and jewel tones.

The New Look met with protest from women who had grown accustomed to baring their legs and were disinclined to cover them back up. Moreover, the opulent, fabric-rich designs seemed wasteful in distinction to wartime fabric restrictions. The desire for convert prevailed, however, and the look flourished throughout much of the 1950s.

OriginHunan, China renowned for both their aroma and appearance, Jasmine Pearls are a fine representative of the art of Chinese handcrafted teas.Choicest LeavesIn making Jasmine Pearls only the choicest leaves of the tea plant are used. After plucking, the leaves are 'withered' on traditional bamboo trays to reduce their moisture, making them supple and condusive for hand rolling. Mature leaves are then removed leaving only the newly sprouted bud and its long stem.HandrollingThe technique for handrolling pearls takes years to master. Using a soft cotton paper, the top bud stem are gently twisted between the thumb and index finger into a small 'pearl' shape. After firing over low heat, each pearl is removed from the paper. One pound of tea is composed of nearly 2000 pearls.Jasmine InfusionIn the summer, when Jasmine flowers are at their most fragrant, the pearls are scented overnight in a room with thousands of blossoms. High grade Jasmine Pearls undergo this process at least five times.Sweet FragranceJasmine is by far one of the sweetest, most soothing aromatic flowers. Jasmine Pearls capture this essence and release the fragrance of night-blooming jasmine in every brewed cup.

How to recognize Genuine Freshwater Pearls

Pearls are elegant jewelry. You can buy them shaped as necklaces, bracelets, earrings or even as an accent to a ring. There are hundreds, if not thousands of pearl jewelry designs to select from in the shop today. Before you buy one for yourself, you should learn how to recognize if what you are getting is genuine or fake.

First, you have to know the kind of pearl that is ready in the market. They are categorized in two:

Pearl

Saltwater pearls - these are formed inside oysters that are living in the heart of the ocean. It has three types - Tahitian, Akoya, and South Sea Pearls - depending on the kind of oyster that produced it. Freshwater pearls - these are formed inside mussels that are living in lakes, rivers, ponds, or any other body of fresh water.

Either saltwater pearls or freshwater pearls can be natural or cultured. Natural means that there is no human intervention and the pearl is formed plainly by the oyster or mussel. The pearl oyster secretes nacre an iridescent material made of calcium carbonate. The nacre will coat a puny irritant entering its shell until a pearl is formed. On the other hand, cultured means that a pearl grower will carefully open the shell and introduce a small object as an irritant (commonly a bead or metal), then get them back into the water and wait for the pearl to form. This usually takes 2-5 years.

There are a lot of fake pearls out there, but it is more pleasant to own a genuine pearl jewelry at least once in your lifetime. A genuine pearl does not only mean "natural". Even "cultured" pearls are genuine pearls too, having an advantage of being more affordable than natural pearls.

When you hear of fake pearls, it means that they are man-made pearls made of glass, ceramics, plastics or any other similar materials. They are also called "faux" pearls and are sold as costume jewelry. In the face of modern technology, man can originate pearls that look like the traditional one. Mind you, fakes can have the exact traditional look, but they do not have the same weight or texture. And their luster is dimmer, which is sufficient to show that they are imitations of the original. They do not consist of any gem value.

To help you with identifying genuine freshwater pearls, here is a three way test:

Tooth test - get the pearl and run it against your front teeth, just right below the biting edge. If you sense a gritty feeling, it is most probably real. Fake pearls are smooth, like plastic or glass. However, be very true of the pearls that are made from ground shells as they can also be gritty. Luster test - test the pearls against all kinds of light. Fake pearls will have a shine only on the surface, while genuine pearls always shine from within. Rub test - get two pearls and rub it together. It should be gritty and do not slide off each other.

The Scarlet Letter and Symbolism

The Scarlet Letter is a novel with much symbolism. Throughout the novel several characters represent other ideas. One of the most complicated and misunderstood characters in the novel is Pearl, the daughter of Hester Prynne. Pearl, throughout the story, develops into a dynamic fastener - one that is all the time changing. Although Pearl changes, she all the time symbolizes evil. Pearl symbolizes evil in the story by representing God's punishment of Hester's sin, symbolizing the guilt and the scarlet letter that controls her behavior, and defying Puritan laws by being cheerful and associating with nature. Pearl represents God's punishment by her mocking and nagging of Hester. Throughout the novel she sometimes seemed to her mother as roughly a witch baby (Matthiessen 104). She is a baffling compound of strong emotions with a fierce temper and a capacity for evil. With Pearl, Hester's life became one of constant nagging, and no joy. The child could not be made amenable to rules. Hester even remarks to herself, "Oh Father in heaven - if thou art still my father - what is this being which I have brought into the world" (Hawthorne 89)? Pearl would harass her mother Piyasena/Pine 2 over the scarlet "A" she wore. In time, Hester was subjected to so much ridicule from Pearl and others that she was forced into seclusion. Pearl represents the sins of both Hester and Dimmesdale. Pearl is said to be the direct consequence of sin (Martin 108). Their sins consist of lying to the people about the affair that led to Pearl. Hester realizes what Pearl represents when she does not hold Pearl up in front of the "A." She carries the child colse to because it is a direct reflection of her sin. Hester is, "wisely judging that one token of her shame would but poorly serve to hide another" (Hawthorne 48).

Dimmesdale's sin is not adultery but not having the courage to admit that he had adulterated. Therefore his is a "concealed sin." The scarlet letter amuses Pearl, and also controls her behavior. It is noted that, Pearl has been described in terms roughly exclusively of uncontrolled, chaotic passion (MacLean 54). Throughout the novel Pearl is attracted to the "A." Even when she is just a baby, "her infant's eyes had been caught by the glimmering of the gold exaggeration about the letter" (Hawthorne 90). When Pearl is older and Hester throws the letter on the ground, Pearl yells at her mother until she places the "A" back on her bosom. Hawthorne says that Pearl is, "the scarlet letter in another form; the scarlet letter endowed with life," (95) which proves the she is truly the scarlet letter. Throughout the book the "A" is the sign by which the colonial authority seek to fix the crime and the criminal (Ragussis 97), although the cloth shows the sin so does Pearl. She is a far stronger device for punishing Hester than Piyasena/Pine 3 the piece of cloth on Hester's chest. Due to her influence, Pearl becomes the chief agent to her mother's salvation. Hester and Dimmesdale share much guilt because of Pearl. Dimmesdale's guilt is filled with thinking anguish, and serves as a constant reminder of his sin. Dimmesdale is a minister [who] commits adultery and is driven to communal confession by remorse (Martin 108). He remains silent so that he can continue to do God's work as a minister. It is said that he was a guilty character [who] finds empathy in connection with others (Peckham 92). Pearl brings him guilt when he would not stand with them on the scaffold; "Thou was not bold! - thou wast not true! ... Thou wouldst not promise to take my hand, and my mother's hand, tomorrow noontide" (Hawthorne 150)! Hester's guilt, however, is derived from both Chillingsworth and Dimmesdale. Chillingsworth married a woman who did not love him, which is one of the causes of Hester's guilt. Dimmesdale causes her guilt when he sees her suffering alone for the sin that they both committed. Though they both committed the same sin, only Hester's shines through. Pearl was cheerful due to the scarlet letter her mother possessed. When the breastplate at Governor Bellingham's Mansion distorts the scarlet "A" into something overpowering and horrible, it is Pearl who points at it, "smiling at her mother with the elfish intelligence that was so customary an expression on her small physiognomy" (Hawthorne 99). Even as a child, Pearl is affixed to the letter "and, putting up her tiny hand, she grasped it, [the letter] smiling, not doubtfully, but Piyasena/Pine 4 with a decided gleam" (Hawthorne 90).

Pearl

Pearl's tendency to focus on the scarlet letter is fully industrialized when she mimics her mother by placing a seaweed "A" on her own chest. Much of Pearl's mystery comes from her exceptional quickness of mind and the abnormal environment in which she is reared with only her mother as a companion. As Pearl develops a personality, she becomes symbolic of the kind of passion that accompanied Hester's sin. Hester tolerated Pearl's pretentious behavior but could not find it in her heart to condemn the child. As Pearl thus becomes so closely connected with the letter "A" on Hester's breast she becomes the embodiment not only of Hester's sin but also of her conscience. Nature is an amusing hobby for Pearl; therefore one of her beloved activities is playing with flowers and trees. She fits in with natural things, "and she was gentler here [the forest] then in the grassy margined streets of the settlement, or in her mother's cottage" as Hawthorne notes in the novel (202). She is so closely affiliated to nature that the creatures of the forest coming her instead of disperse. "The mother-forest, and these wild things which it nourished, all recognized a kindred wildness in the human child" Hawthorne notes as Pearl is on a walk with her mother (202).

However, the Puritans believed that anyone affiliated with the forest was evil; therefore, Pearl defies their laws by being effervescent and joyful in the woods. Some of the Puritans even believe her to be a demon offspring. So unusual is her behavior that she is often referred to in such terms as "elf child," Piyasena/Pine 5 "imp," and "airy sprite." Pearl is a virtual shouting match between the Puritanical views and the Romantic ways. Pearl is a source of many kinds of symbolism. She is both a rose and categorically the scarlet letter. If she had not been born, Hester would not have had to wear the letter. Pearl is a burden to Hester; yet Hester loves her. She is also her mother's only treasure and her only source of survival. Without Pearl, Hester would have lived a distinct life, one without the scarlet letter, one without sin, and one without her treasure.

Facts on Pearl Harbor

On December 7th, 1941, before many Americans were even awake, the Japanese Navy struck the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor with a surprising and deadly attack. There are many facts on Pearl Harbor that will be brought to light in this article.

Twelve facts on Pearl Harbor:

Pearl

1. Pearl Harbor is a United States naval base located west of Honolulu on the island of O'ahu, Hawaii.

2. It was the assault on Pearl Harbor that brought the United States into World War Ii.

3. Due to the fact that it was a Sunday morning, many of the soldiers were sleeping and were fully unaware of the catastrophe that was soon to be upon them all.

4. The assault on Pearl Harbor by the Empire of Japan was supposed to be a preventive assault used to scare the United States from interfering with Japans' plan to wage war against Britain, the Netherlands, and the United States. Although this was a very good strategic victory for the Japanese, they used huge amounts of resources for this one attack.

5. There were two waves of planes that attacked the U.S Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor. The first arrived at 7:55 a.m. And consisted of 183 planes. The second wave arrived practically an hour later with 167 planes. There were very few soldiers ready to fight on cue, thus the damage and devastation was quite severe.

6. In all, the Japanese sank or damaged 188 aircraft, eight U.S. Navy battleships, three destroyers, three cruisers, and one minelayer. The damage caused to the Japanese navy was very small, Only 29 aircraft out of 350 were destroyed.

7. There were 2,403 habitancy killed, 68 of those were civilians. 1,178 were wounded.

8. There had been a proclamation of war sent to the United States by the Japanese before the assault even happened, but the United States view that it was an ending to negotiations. This mistake proved deadly.

9. The Four U.S. Navy battleships that were destroyed were the Uss Arizona, the Uss Nevada, the Uss Oklahoma, and the Uss West Virginia.

10. The Japanese view that the battleships were the customary source of the United States strength, but they failed to comprehend that the aircraft carriers and submarines would be adequate adequate to stop them in the end.

11. Although the Empire of Japan caused huge amounts of damage to the United States, there were still many members in congress that did not want to go to war, and felt the need was quite small. However, this did not stop the United States from declaring war with Japan the very next day.

12. Lastly, one of the main reasons that the assault on Pearl Harbor did not ensue was because this very assault helped spur the Americans onward and proved to be a huge rallying point for the troublesome days, months, and years that lay ahead.

Quahog Pearls

Quahog pearls are amongst the rarest of gemstones but in fact, they are technically not pearls - they can still be very beautiful nevertheless, and they are typically stained a shade of purple, the only pearls that are so colored under natural conditions. Quahogs are pronounced "ko-hog", and are clams which many of us have enjoyed in a range of dishes, or naturally steamed at an oyster bar or restaurant. They are native to the Eastern Us coast, especially around New England, and have been exported to the Pacific and European shores as they lend themselves to "aquaculture". Indeed, in New England they form an foremost part of the fishing economy and are a major export from the region.

It is notion that only 1 in 5,000 clams produces a pearl but, before a quahog pearl can be carefully valuable, it also must possess optic petition - many are misshapen, or not particularly pretty to look at, which precludes their use in jewellery. This makes those quahog pearls which are convenient for use in jewelry that much more valuable. Despite the huge industrial farming action which processes millions of quahog clams every year, pearls are increasingly rare because of the automatic nature of the process. Clams are cleaned and shucked mechanically, and this process typically destroys any pearls which may otherwise be uncovered.

Pearl

Oyster pearls are formed by concretions being formed around internal deformities, parasites or other foreign piece of matter such as a grain of sand. The oyster reacts to this irritant by enclosing the body with layers of hardened pearl material, known as nacre and which covers the deformity or foreign matter and it is this which grows into a pearl. Cultured pearls use the same process but the oyster is stimulated to grow the pearl by man not nature.

Pearls are formed in a very similar fashion to oyster pearls, though as quahogs are not oysters, quahog pearls are not carefully to be pearls themselves. The quahogs which are found along the coast of New England, and especially focused upon Rhode Island, are the only ones which possess the purple tint. This is because the quahog clams there are the only ones which yield the purple dye, and this can cause a quahog pearl to vary from a light lilac color through to deep purple and very deep black. As these quahogs are the only bivalve which secretes the purple stain, their pearls are the only ones to possess this coloration though the degree to which an individual quahog pearl is colored will vary widely.

Quahog pearls have been a sought after gemstone amongst New England jewelry makers for at least a combine of hundred years, but the quahog pearl has a much longer connection with man than that. Native American Indians used these splendid pearls both for decorative purposes and as "wampum" or money. Native Americans would use the quahog pearl as a medium for transfer by carving the tabular beads and these could be used for trading.

Valuation and pricing vary enormously and ultimately, the price of any item is only that which a buyer is ready to pay. An example will construe the point - in 2005 a rare quahog was discovered in a yard sale and bought for a mere - when it came to auction, the piece was widely valued at whatever between ,000 and million! The eventual sales price is unknown as it was sold to a private bidder in a sealed auction.

Surely the value in effect lies not in the price tag which is attached to a quahog pearl, but rather the beauty of this natural gemstone and the artisanship of the piece into which it is set. Beauty, in this instance, is clearly in the eye of the beholder.

How To Spot A Real, Natural, Cultured, And Fake Pearl

I am not in New York City and am quite a bit more southern than that. As for "best of the best" that depends on how well the examine fits my particular expertise. My main knowledge is in jewelry work, either production a piece from scratch or repairing great grandmother's hand-me-down. Pearls I do know something about but am not the best of the best in that category!

Real Pearls, Natural And Cultured

Pearl

First, the term "pearl" is not but should be applied only to natural pearls, formed in a mollusk when some event in nature induces the oyster or mussel to form a pearl. These pearls are quite rare and are the pearls of antiquity before pearl farmers learned to culture pearls. Freshwater pearls fished from the rivers in the Usa are natural pearls but nowadays, most freshwater pearls are also cultured in freshwater pearl farms.

In any event, plainly forming or cultured, such pearls are formed in the oyster or mussel and are not fakes. The real dissimilarity in the totally natural pearl and the cultured pearls is what makes the pearl start to grow and the thickness of the nacre. Nacre is the pearly layers that make a pearl so lovely. The natural pearl will have very thick nacre, ordinarily forming in concentric rings nearby some starting source or irritation to the mollusk.

A large natural pearl is very, very rare. Cultured pearls ordinarily use a "core" of mother-of-pearl, the shell of the mollusk. The bead core goes into the mollusk and nacre is formed nearby the core. The core determines the uncut shape of the pearl. How long the oyster is allowed to let the pearl grow determines the thickness of the nacre. Thicker nacre is better. Best of all is thick nacre and a smooth, practically fault free surface.

Pearls grown inside the mussel or oyster do have a gritty feel to the tooth.

Fake Pearls

Fake pearls are made by coating a core of some sort (mother-of-pearl, plastic, etc.) with a plastic, a kind of paint containing ground fish scales or other stuff that look pearly to the eye. Generally, the fakes do Not have a gritty feel to the tooth. Most may be identified with a minuscule custom and a 10x jewelers loupe or microscope. The way to do it is to collate real pearls with some known fakes. The fakes practically always show a grittier "look" to the exterior and not the more smoothly formed natural nacre. The look is grittier but the feel to a tooth is smoother. After some custom comparisons, most fakes are fairly unmistakably identified.

Still, some are hard to detect without very appropriate testing sometimes using solvents and acids which assault the real pearl nacre but not the plastic fakes and visa versa.

Other than that, a look at the drilled holes in the beads will help. Since the pearl is formed plainly without a hole, the hole must be drilled. The exterior of the pearl at the drill hole will not "sink in" or "rise up" as is seen in many fakes that are formed and coated with the holes already made to the core. In the real pearl, the nacre will be level with the drill hole and might even be chipped a bit.

Some folks suggest having a dentist do an x-ray to see what is inside. Still, unless a man is very, very customary with reading the images the results are very iffy. A core will look like a core either in a fake or a cultured pearl. A core will not be gift to any large extent in a pearl formed freely in the ocean but those pearls just are not nearby or to be had except in very small sizes.

Using a good loupe (hand held magnifier) of 10 powers is likely the best home test. Of course, try the teeth first! Then look at the drill holes and the exterior compared to a good cultured pearl.

There is not a one-in-all test I can recommend. Some of this will plainly wish some "pearls" of real and fakes for comparison.

Even the jewelers are fooled once in a while but not often.Have you seen Mabe pearls? These are the large "half pearls" often seen in rings and pendants. Some years ago some unmistakably good fakes hit the market and were being sold at very contentious prices'that is, compared to the real ones. Many were sold and bought as the real thing! The testing for these required disassembly of the fake mabes plus solvent and acid tests. A lot of buyers were taken in on this one, likely never to know they bought and later sold fake mabe pearls.
